Introduction

The Gujarati School was established on 2nd October, 1947. The classes were conducted at 79 Waterloo Street.

The School was transferred from 79 Waterloo Street to No. 2 Goodman Road on 1st October 1969. The School was registered by the Ministry of Education on 19th January 1960.

A Committee named “Gujarati Language Review Committee” was setup comprising members from the school committee, well-wishers and interested parents. The objective of the committee was do a study of the needs of the Gujarati community for classes ranging from KG to A Levels. The Committee presented a report to the Gujarati School on 5th November 1993. Its recommendations were accepted by the School.

With the change of the Mother Tongue Language policy allowing Gujarati pupils to take Gujarati in-lieu of Chinese, Malay and Tamil. Singapore Gujarati School started classes from KG to A Level on 8th January 1994 at Haig Girls’ School. We had an attendance of 112 pupils of whom 57 were taking Gujarati as a second Language.

On 23rd January 2003, a joint body was registered called the Board for the Teaching and Testing of South Asian Languages. It represented all the languages in the NTIL programme.

On 3rd January 2007, after some 37 years, No. 2 Goodman Road premise was sold and the school premise moved to 225 Joo Chiat Road. The official opening of the new premises was held on Sunday, 19th October 2008 and RAdm (NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts officiated at its opening.

સિંગાપોર ગુજરાતી સ્કૂલ લિમિટેડ

ગુજરાતી શાળાની સ્થાપના 2nd ઓક્ટોબર 1947ના દિવસે કરવામાં આવી હતી. તે વખતે શાળા 79 વોટરલૂ સ્ટ્રીટમાં કાર્યવત હતી.

1st ઓક્ટોબર 1969ના દિવસે 79, વોટરલૂ સ્ટ્રીટ થી 2, ગુડમેન રોડ પર ગુજરાતી શાળાનું સ્થળાંતર કરવામાં આવ્યું. 19 જાન્યુઆરી 1960ના દિવસે મિનિસ્ટ્રી ઓફ એડ્યુકેશનમાં ગુજરાતી શાળાની નોંધણી કરવામાં આવી અને આમ ગુજરાતી શાળાની શરૂઆત થઈ.

થોડા વર્ષો પછી "ગુજરાતી લેન્ગવેજ રિવ્યૂ કમિટી" બેસાડવામાં આવી, જેમાં શાળાના સદસ્યો, શુભ-ચિંતકો અને શાળાના કાર્યોમાં રસ ધરાવતા વાલીઓની નિમણૂંક કરવામાં આવી. આ સમિતિનો મુખ્ય ઉદ્દેશ KG થી A Level સુધી શાળામાં ભણતા વિદ્યાર્થીઓની આવશ્યકતાઓ વિષે સંશોધન કરવાનો હતો. 5th નવેમ્બર 1983ના દિવસે આ સમિતિએ અહેવાલ રજૂ કર્યો અને તે અહેવાલ મુજબ શાળામાં કેટલાક ફેરફારો કરવામાં આવ્યા.

માતૃભાષાના શિક્ષણમાં પરિવર્તન આવ્યું જેને કારણે ચાઈનીસ, મલય અને તમિલ ભાષાની જગ્યાએ ગુજરાતી ભાષા ભણવાની છૂટ મળી. 8th જાન્યુઆરી 1994ને દિવસે ‘હેગ ગર્લ્સ સ્કૂલ’માં KG થી માંડીને A Level સુધીના વિદ્યાર્થીઓ માટે ગુજરાતી ભાષાનું શિક્ષણ આપવાનું શરૂ થયું. તે સમયે શાળામાં 112 વિદ્યાર્થીઓ ભણતા હતા તેમાંથી 57 વિદ્યાર્થીઓએ ગુજરાતી વિષય લેવાનો નિર્ણય લીધો.

23rd જાન્યુઆરી 2003માં સંયુક્ત સમિતિની રચના કરવામાં આવી અને તે સમિતિને 'બોર્ડ ફોર ધ ટીચિંગ એન્ડ ટેસ્ટિંગ ઓફ સાઉથ એશિયન લેન્ગવૅજસ’ નામ આપવામાં આપ્યું. આ સમિતિએ NTIL તરીકે ઓળખાતી દરેક ભાષાઓનું પ્રતિનિધિત્વ કર્યું.

37 વર્ષ પછી, 3rd જાન્યુઆરી 2007ને દિવસે નંબર 2, ગુડમન રોડ પર આવેલાં શાળાના મકાનને વેચીને 225, જૂચિયાટ રોડ પર નવું મકાન ખરીદવામાં આવ્યું. 19 ઓક્ટોબર 2008, રવિવારના દિવસે આર.એ.ડી.એમ. (NS) લુઈ ટક યુ (સિનિયર મિનિસ્ટર ઓફ સ્ટેટ મિનિસ્ટ્રી ઓફ એડયુકેશન અને મિનિસ્ટ્રી ઓફ ઇન્ફોરમેશન કૉમ્યૂનિકેશન એન્ડ આર્ટસ) દ્વારા આ નવી શાળાનું ઉદ્દઘાટન કરવામાં આવ્યું.
